Preserving history. Educating generations.
Strengthening community.
The African American Historical Society of Irmo honors the past while empowering future generations through education and cultural programming.
About Us
The African American Historical Society of Irmo was founded to ensure that the achievements, struggles, and legacies of African Americans connected to Irmo are not lost to time. We collect oral histories, family archives, photographs, documents, and local narratives that help paint a fuller picture of our community’s heritage. Our work supports museums, libraries, schools, researchers, and families seeking to understand how African American history has shaped Irmo’s growth, culture, and identity. We believe that by preserving these stories, we strengthen community pride and build bridges across generations.
"History has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own."
-Michelle Obama
